Locusts found in Shirlalu village of Dakshina Kannada district
MANGALURU: Farmers in Shirlalu village of Belthangady taluk in Dakshina Kannada district were panic-stricken after they found swarms of locusts, which they feared as the arrival of desert locusts.
Villagers said locusts in large numbers were seen in many areas and they have also alerted agriculture department. A Shirlalu villager said, insects in large number have destroyed crops of many farmers. “Many farmers have seen the presence of insects in villages of Belthangady taluk. We have informed officials of the agriculture department,” villager said.
Joint director of Dakshina Kannada district agriculture department MC Seetha told TOI that officials have received information from villagers about the locust scare and entemologists have already visited the place to collect more information.
“We have received information on Saturday evening. We immediately contacted entemologists and forwarded the pictures that farmers sent to us. Looking at the picture, entemologists have opined that it may be calotropis locust or colour grasshopper. Desert locusts usually arrive in lakhs,” she said adding that the insects found in Dakshina Kannada villages may not be desert locusts.
