Twenty four hours after declaring in a public rally that all the notices sent by the CBI would be sent back to Delhi, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday directed her party men to submit the details of their accounts and other necessary documents to the investigating agency.

Significantly, in a public meeting on Wednesday, Banerjee accused the BJP government of using the investigating agencies to “gag the voices of dissent” and said that the CBI could collect the ‘required’ documents from the Income Tax department.

A four member team led by TMC leader Tapas Roy on Thursday held a 40 minute long meeting with the CBI investigators and submitted the documents. “As per the directions of the party, we came here and handed over the documents,” Trinamool Congress MLA Tapas Roy told media persons outside the CBI office.

Responding to the questions about the type of documents submitted, Roy said, “We have given all the necessary documents, which were desired by the CBI.”

The CBI, which is probing the multi-crore chit fund scam, had sent a notice to the TMC on April 6 seeking the details of the party’s accounts since 2010.

Echoing Banerjee’s view, her nephew and party MP Abhishek Banerjee said, “Such notices come whenever there are elections. CBI, ED and other such agencies work as puppets for BJP. Even the Supreme Court called CBI a caged parrot.”
