Now, prescription by MBBS doctor enough for Covid test in Gujarat | Ahmedabad News

AHMEDABAD: Bowing to pressure from the medical fraternity and a cross section of society, the Gujarat government on Wednesday allowed doctors with an MBBS degree to prescribe the Covid test. Earlier, only doctors with MD or equivalent degrees were allowed to refer suspected Covid patients to labs for testing.
The move is expected to give a major boost to testing in the state as it continues to reel under the pandemic. On Wednesday, the state recorded yet another daily high of 925 Covid-19 cases. This roughly translates to one case every 90 seconds. The cases included 236 from Surat, 172 from Ahmedabad, 77 from Vadodara and 54 from Rajkot.
Gujarat also recorded loss of 10 Covid-19 patients in 24 hours, taking the state’s death toll to 2,081. The deaths recorded in 24 hours included five from Surat, two from Ahmedabad and one each from Bhavnagar, Navsari and Gandhinagar.
Dr Mona Desai, president of Ahmedabad Medical Association (AMA), said that the association had approached state authorities to allow MBBS doctors to prescribe the test as general physicians were first points of contact for any patient. “The move is welcome and will help in more people getting tested and treated promptly.”
“Except city areas, it’s difficult for patients to find an MD to get a test prescribed,” Dr Desai said, adding that the move would help detect new infections quickly which would eventually result in better management of cases in the state.
Meanwhile, the notification, issued by the state government, also identifies four other categories where the pre-approval from the state authorities is not required for Covid-19 test.
