LOCALS in an Azamgarh village Friday set ablaze a rice mill after word spread that a teenager, missing for the past two days, was being held captive there. While portion of the mill was gutted, the boy remained untraced.

Officers of Atraulia police station have, besides a kidnapping case in connection with the boy’s disappearance, registered an FIR Saturday against the villagers of Vaispur, charging them with rioting and arson.

The police said the villagers had also blocked the main road in Badhya Bazar in Atraulia, protesting against the disappearance of 14-year-old Chandan Nishad, son of Ram Dawal Nishad.

The villagers alleged that the Chandan was being held captive in the rice mill owned by one Sonu, originally a resident of Ambedkarnagar district.

“The police reached the spot and made the villagers speak with the rice mill owner. Sonu told them that Chandan was not there. The police managed to get the blockade lifted, after assuring proper investigation. Things appeared to be getting normal when some 20-25 villagers from Vaispur torched a room in Sonu’s rice mill. A case has been registered in this connection,” said Circle officer (Budhanpur), Radhey Shyam Kol.
Investigation revealed that Chandan had left from Delhi on September 9 for home after he could not find any work there. But Chandan never reached home.

“Searching for Chandan, the villagers reached the rice mill, which is nearly eight km from their place. Even after being told that Chandan wasn’t there, they continued with their protest while alleging that they were being misled by the police. Besides the FIR against the villagers, a case of kidnapping has been registered and search is on to trace Chandan,” Kol said
