Simdega woman tonsured, paraded naked on witchcraft charge, 8 held | Ranchi News

Gumla: A pahan (tribal priest) and six women were among the eight persons arrested on Tuesday for allegedly accusing an elderly woman of practicing witchcraft, chopping off her hair and parading her naked through the lanes of Kombhakera-Ganjhutoli village under Kolebira police station limits on Saturday.
Simdega SP Shams Tabrez said the priest was identified as Kishun Pahan while the others are Malawati Devi, Asha Devi, Leelawati Devi, Lilawati Devi, Lalita Devi, Angani Devi and Ajit Sahu.
Police said the villagers, led by the priest, called the 55-year-old woman to attend a panchayat meeting, where she was accused of practising witchcraft that led to the death of a local. “They cut off her hair and paraded her in the village. The victim lodged a complaint with the police on September 21, after which a team was constituted under Simdega SDPO and the accused were arrested,” he said.
State police data says nearly 1,200 people, mostly women, have been killed on charges of practicing black magic since the creation of Jharkhand in 2000.
