People tend to the fisherman who fainted when exiting the airport.
CHENNAI: There was high drama at Chennai airport soon after the 40 TN fishermen, who had landed from Iran via Delhi, started to walk out of the domestic arrival terminal. One of the fishermen, Selvamani Vishnu, 22, of Nagapattinam, collapsed as he was walking towards the exit.
Those near him and co-passengers rushed to his aid, removing the white overalls given by the airline and reviving him using water. He was rushed to the medical centre inside the terminal in a wheelchair. Two other fishermen from the same district stayed back while the rest of the team left in buses. The men were overjoyed on reaching Chennai after spending a tough four months without work nor pay in Iran. Selvaraj, of Manakudi in Kanyakumari, said, “I went to work through an agent who took me to Dubai and then to Iran after papers were prepared. But we didn’t get paid when brought back to land following the spread of Covid-19. All of us shared our savings for survival till help arrived.”
The fishermen boarded a charter flight by Mahan Air arranged by Sanjay Prashar of International Maritime Federation after a call for help from L Praveen Kumar of Maritime People’s Welfare Association in Chennai.
