Uthra and Sooraj
KOLLAM: As the investigation into the snakebite death of Uthra progresses, investigators are trying to establish whether it was a planned murder executed with the knowledge of her husband’s entire family. Police interrogated Sooraj’s mother, Renuka, and sister, Soorya, on Tuesday.
A Punalur court had placed Surendran, Sooraj’s father, in police custody. It was on Monday night that the crime branch investigation team arrested him from his residence in Parakode, Adoor.
The pink police patrol from Punalur took Renuka and Soorya into custody. By 1.15pm they were produced at the crime branch office in Kottarakkara. Earlier they had been asked to report before CB officials, which they did not comply with.
They were interrogated for hours in the presence of rural SP S Harisankar. Renuka initially pleaded innocence, but as investigators confronted her with evidence after evidence she got flustered and reportedly told the police that she knew about the gold buried on the house premises. But Soorya held her ground. Both will now be interrogated together. In the third phase, Sooraj would be interrogated along with his mother and sister.
Their interrogation could last for hours, Harisankar suggested. A decision on their arrest would be taken later. CB is probing the scope of conspiracy behind the murder.
“We have arrested Sooraj’s father, Surendran, as it was he who buried the gold. Sooraj’s mother also was in the know,” he said. The SP said charges under domestic harassment, destruction of evidence and cheating would be invoked against Surendran.
